nice list…here are my additions:
- RTHK podcast app
- HK Weather
- softkeyboard (for Chinese input, which is not available on my UK version of the HTC Hero)
- Handcent SMS (for displaying SMS in speech bubbles like the iphone)
- Locale (a very useful app, asking the phone to change settings according to certain conditions, e.g. forward all calls to home line when phone detects that you’re at home by GPS)
- OI File Manager (for organizing files on external micro SD card)
- AppManager (backup, un/install, detect adwares, etc.)
- wpToGo (wordpress editor with very pleasant UI)
- I don’t really like the HK Weather program, ‘coz it only notifies me of weather alert. I want something which can give me weather info on hourly basis.
- For Chinese input, you may want to take a look at http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=512530 , this works for G1, but I think it may be adapted to Hero
- I like manual settings than auto-setting, so I don’t use Locale.
Some alternatives to your list :-
- ChompSMS is another decent SMS program
- I recommend ASTRO or Linda as file manager
- My Market is another useful Market overlay / filter
- PostBot also works with wordpress
the Chinese input thing looks VERY promising….gotta try it out tonight!
i only use locale to set my phone to vibrate during work hours, haha
ChompSMS is inferior to Handcent as it doesn’t allow attachments…
haha, your use of Locale is text-book example of 牛刀小試
I am not a heavy SMS user so even the built-in messaging application is enough for me, but I may try Handcent just for fun.
Btw, have you tried SMS Backup? It backups your SMS to your gmail account.
Alan,
I wandered across this page randomly, but…
I only wrote the HK Weather app to display alerts, because they are HK-specific. If you just want to know the weather forecast, there are 10s of apps which will grab one and display it for you – but it won’t tell you when the T3 has gone up!
hi richard, i’m a fan of your app
not just typhoons..i also got heat warnings, which, like you said, are very HK-specific!
Thanks for comment, Richard. Perhaps I had the wrong expectation of your program. The first time I installed it I didn’t know what it did at all because the weather was fine at that moment.
Alan: Then you can try my HK Weather Widget
Your widget is now on the top right corner of my middle home screen
